Role Pattern Library
Ten common role patterns, each built from real actions in the permission catalog, so you can use them directly or adapt them to your own team's structure.
Default Roles Baseline
Every account starts with two ready-to-use roles:
Read-Only
View access across every operational module.
Full-Operations
Create/edit/manage access across every operational module. Both baseline roles intentionally exclude billing, subscription, and payment method administration, which stays with the Account Owner.
Either can be assigned as-is, or you can build fully custom roles, groups, and policies from scratch with any combination of permissions your organization needs.
10 Role Patterns
Every pattern below is a starting point, not a fixed prescription - adjust the resource and scope restrictions on each action to match your own team's actual structure, using the Effective Permissions panel to confirm the result matches your intent before handing the role to anyone.
1. SOC Manager
A team lead who needs full operational visibility and the ability to manage how work is distributed, without needing IAM or billing access.

siem:caseassignment:update is scoped to the manager's own team's cases and teammates.
2. Compliance Auditor
Read-only access broad enough to answer "what happened and who had what access," with zero ability to change anything.

siem:report:read is scoped to every report period, since an audit often spans a full year.
3. IT Operations
Focused on asset health and connectivity rather than threat investigation.

siem:assetname:editsiem:notification:receivesystemalertsDeliberately excluded: Every siem:incident:* and siem:case:* action, and every iam:* action - this role isn't meant to triage security events, only keep the fleet itself healthy and connected.
siem:inventory:read is granted across all inventory categories.
4. Executive Read-Only
A leadership stakeholder who wants visibility into overall posture without any operational or investigative capability.
View
siem:dashboard:readsiem:report:readsiem:mitre:readDeliberately excluded: Nothing else - no Log Analysis, no case or incident detail, no IAM visibility. This is intentionally the narrowest pattern in the library: it answers "how are we doing," not "what specifically happened."
siem:report:read is scoped to monthly and quarterly periods only, not daily/weekly operational detail.
5. Third-Party MSSP Viewer
An outside security service provider who needs enough visibility to advise, but no standing ability to act inside your environment directly.

siem:case:communicateEvery read permission is restricted to the specific subset of assets covered by the engagement. If the engagement occasionally needs deeper access, grant that through a scoped assumable role rather than standing access.
6. Detection Engineer
Focused on tuning what the platform alerts on, without needing case-management or IAM responsibilities.

siem:aifeedback:updateDeliberately excluded: Case management and IAM actions - this role's job is the detection layer itself, not the response workflow built on top of it.
Also granted the alert-threshold and rule-muting actions for the specific assets this engineer is responsible for tuning.
7. Workspace / Dashboard Builder
A person who builds and maintains custom workspaces for the rest of the team, without needing investigative access themselves.

siem:workspace:createsiem:workspace:updatesiem:widget:createsiem:widget:updateDeliberately excluded: siem:workspace:delete and siem:widget:delete outside of items they personally own, so a builder can iterate freely on their own work without being able to remove workspaces built by others.
Asset-restricted to whatever data the builder is themselves permitted to see, which automatically bounds what any workspace they build can expose.
8. Billing Administrator
Manages the commercial relationship without touching security operations at all.

9. On-Call Incident Responder (Assumable Role)
Not a standing role - granted only for the duration of an active incident, via the assumable-role pattern. Referred to in practice as "Incident Commander."

Trust policy: verification code required, session capped at a short duration appropriate to how long a typical incident response takes in your environment.
10. New-Hire IAM Administrator (Junior)
An IAM administrator still ramping up, trusted with day-to-day user and group management but not yet with organization-wide guardrails or policy authorship.
